Democracy in Action

Where do we go from here?  You may be wondering about the state of American democracy.

Since the last election, UU The Vote  is expanding our efforts with “ Democracy in Action.”  The UU Advocacy Network of Illinois (UUANI) is building congregational teams across Illinois to preserve democracy and spread UU love.

Divisions in the country are real but not so cut and dried as they may feel.  Voters split tickets – and split on issues.  There were both losses and victories – for either side.  Activists and advocates are committing to bend the arc of justice with renewed vigor.

We have power.  Consider an example: just three states – Illinois, New York, and California – represent over one-quarter of the national gross domestic product (GDP) and have an outsized level of cultural influence.  Adding New Jersey, Washington, and Massachusetts makes a total of just six states that produce over one-third of the national GDP.

Our power resides in working as a community, and you are part of the community.

Follow the link below to the UUANI Democracy in Action form (a survey) where you can voice the issues that are important to you and what actions you may be able to take.  There is no time commitment on your part.  By signing up, you will be kept in the loop on what actions are being taken in the months ahead.  Join in any actions that you choose, when you are able to.

 Actions range from simply welcoming or inviting people to our congregation, to attending a community event, to meeting with elected officials – as a group (an education experience in legislative lobbying for your children, too, if you like).  

This is a critical time in history, a time to promote the UU principle of “the democratic process in society at large,” as it plays a key role in the path forward for many of our other principles.  Our children and vulnerable populations in our community are depending on our collective efforts.
